Excerpts: La Praderia Rural Integration Sports Center is an architectural project designed by Natura Futura in Ecuador. Affinity Engineering reclaims the role of sports equipment from private initiative as a platform for generating and strengthening links between urban and rural areas.

Project Description

(“Text as Submitted by the Architect”)

La Pradería is located in the rural area of Papahuyo and has a population of about 17,985, where the lack of sports facilities is not enough; Its infrastructure hardly covers basic needs and complementary spaces are never provided. It is important to explore how private entities can enhance the creation of spaces that connect and reinterpret local architecture with sporting activities.

Jamie, a sports promoter who has dedicated himself to organizing in-city soccer and soccer tournaments, recognizes the need to create new space within his own land to create a new social and sporting link between urban and rural areas.

La Pradería, with dimensions of 10m x 8m, seeks to be a gateway that blurs the line between exterior and interior to connect the sporting activity with its surroundings. The project is defined laterally by two brick walls. The right side contains services, such as restrooms and a storage room; The left side houses furniture for social gatherings. On the first floor, there is the kitchen and dining bar; Built from brick ruins of the same masonry. On the second level, balconies and terraces promote meeting and reflection on activities.

The goal of the construction process is to work and re-evaluate the local workforce and their traditional technologies, and to combine them with hybrid technologies such as metal structures, that allow us to put new possibilities on the table.

The project envelope is made of foldable metal panels consisting of wooden nets and mosquito nets; A technique used in traditional construction in the region. Its diagonal arrangement improves the stability of the panels, the natural flow of ventilation and prevents the entry of insects. By unlocking these items, social life can be linked to sports activities.

Affinity Engineering reclaims the role of sports equipment from private initiative as a platform for generating and strengthening links between urban and rural areas.
